چکیده
ÐIn this paper we review the theoretical and empirical literature on the cost structure of the provision of intercity highway transportation and specify and estimate our own cost functions. We develop a full cost model which identi®es the key cost components and then estimate costs component by component: user costs, infrastructure costs, time and congestion costs, noise costs, accident costs, and pollution costs. The total long run average cost is $0.34 per vehicle km traveled. The single largest cost category is free ̄ow travel time. While the marginal cost of infrastructure is higher than its average cost, indicating that new construction is increasingly expensive, the marginal cost of driving (user ®xed and variable costs) is less than the average cost, indicating that by increasing travel the user can spread his ®xed cost of a vehicle over more trips without penalty. # 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. A large number of heavy-duty trucks idle a significant amount. Heavy-duty line-haul truck engines idle about 20–40% of the time the engine is running, depending on season and operation. Drivers idle engines to power climate control devices (e.g., heaters and air conditioners) and sleeper compartment accessories (e.g., refrigerators, microwave ovens, and televisions) and to avoid start-up proble...

ÐThe form of a city has a major impact on the lifestyles of its residents. As urban centers grow, careful strategies are required to ensure that the regional quality of life is not adversely aected by this growth. An important strategic consideration is transportation planning. Questions regarding the sustainability of dispersed car dependent urban forms have led to a renewed interest in publi...

In two empirical studies, the impact of attitudes and environmental knowledge on driving distance, travel behaviour and acceptance of various trac restrictions was investigated. The ®rst study included the population in Lund, southern Sweden, and the second the politicians and civil servants responsible for transports and environment in the same city. Comparisons of the two samples revealed si...

To address some of the uncertainties inherent in large-scale models, two very different urban models, an advanced travel demand model and an integrated land use and transportation model, are applied to evaluate land use, transit, and auto pricing policies in the Sacramento, CA (US), region. The empirical and modeling literature is reviewed to identify effective land use, transit, and pricing po...
متن کاملSpeed discrimination thresholds for first- and second-order bars and edges
Speed discrimination thresholds were measured for first- and second-order Gaussian bars and edges as a function of speed and the spatial scale of the modulation signal. Discrimination thresholds were generally higher for the second-order patterns when compared with modulations of luminance. There were no systematic effects of variations in the width of the bars and edges. The results are discus...
